What is the difference between acrylic and silicone sealants?

Both acrylic and silicone sealants are widely used in the DIY sector; they serve different purposes and have distinct properties:

Acrylic sealants:

• Acrylic sealants are water-based, which makes them easy to apply and clean. They can be smoothed with water during application, and any residue can be easily removed with water.
• They adhere well to porous surfaces such as concrete, plaster, and wood.
• Acrylic sealants are paintable and varnishable, making them ideal for visible areas that require a seamless finish.
• However, they are less flexible and can crack under постоянной bending stress. They are also less weather-resistant and may shrink over time.

Silicone sealants:

• Silicone sealants are elastomeric and therefore retain their elasticity even after drying. They are a good choice for areas exposed to movement and vibration, such as joints or piping.
