What does “keyed alike” mean in a profile cylinder?
The term keyed alike in relation to profile cylinders, which are usually used in front doors or security doors, describes a locking system in which several locks can be opened with the same key. Keyed-alike cylinders therefore offer the advantage that only a single key is needed to open all doors to which the locking system has been applied.
Specifically, this means that if you have, for example, three doors in your house and equip them all with keyed-alike cylinders, you would only need one key to open all three doors. This makes everyday handling easier, as you need to carry fewer keys and do not have to remember a separate key for each door.
- Keyed-alike cylinders are therefore particularly practical for buildings with many doors, such as office buildings or residential complexes.
- But even in the private sector, a keyed-alike system can be advantageous, for example so that you can use the same key for the house and garage door.
Despite the convenience, however, you should always be aware that if the key is lost, all doors are affected, as they can all be opened with the same key.
