How do I choose the right wall plug for my project?

The selection of the right wall plug for your project depends on the nature of the wall and the load the plug is meant to support.

Taking these two main factors into account, there are generally four types of wall plugs:

  • Universal plugs: They are versatile and suitable for all types of building materials. This is a good choice if you do not know exactly what kind of wall you have.
  • Expansion plugs: They are ideal for concrete and stone walls, as they can bear heavier loads. If you are fastening heavy objects to the wall, this is the right choice.
  • Cavity wall plugs: They are designed for hollow walls (for example, made of plasterboard). Their special shape distributes the load over a larger area.
  • Tox or chemical anchors: They use a mixture of resin and hardener to hold in very soft or crumbly materials. They are ideal when working in walls that other plugs may not be able to support.

It is important to know that the size of the plug should also be matched to the weight of the load. When in doubt, it is always better to choose a plug that is too large rather than risking the plug collapsing under the load.
