Can drop seals be used for exterior doors and windows?

Automatic drop seals are generally specially designed for interior doors and work very well to improve soundproofing and thermal insulation. They also help keep out drafts and dust. However, they are not always suitable for exterior doors or windows. Here is why:

  • First, exterior doors and windows exposed to extreme weather conditions require durable and weatherproof sealing systems. These seals must be resistant to rain, snow, UV light, and extreme temperatures. Automatic drop seals are often unable to meet these requirements.
  • Furthermore, installing an automatic drop seal on an exterior door or window may not be practical. On many exterior doors, for example, thresholds are designed to prevent water ingress. An automatic drop seal could interfere with this design.
  • Certain types of automatic drop seals can also impair the movement of the door or window. They could potentially cause jamming problems, which can hinder the proper function of the door or window.

Instead, you may want to consider durable, weather-resistant, and UV-resistant seals or silicone sealants, specifically developed for use on exterior doors and windows.
